On December 14th, 1636, a Qing army pours into Joseon, and King In-jo (Park Hae-il) flees with his court to the mountain fortress of Namhan. Inside the walls, the minister Choe Myeong-gil (Lee Byung-hun) argues for negotiating with the invaders, while Kim Sang-heon (Kim Yoon-seok) insists on holding out. Hwang Dong-hyuk keeps the camera inside the fortress, so the siege is felt through the councils and the cold.
