The Fountain

“What if you could live forever?”

One story is set in sixteenth-century Spain, one in the present day, one in a distant future, and the same two faces move through all three. Tom Creo (Hugh Jackman) is a scientist racing to find a cure for his wife, Izzi (Rachel Weisz), who has a cancer that is getting worse. Darren Aronofsky cuts between the centuries, and each Tom keeps reaching for Izzi while she is slipping away.
