The Fountainhead

(1949)Directed by King Vidor112 minDrama, Romance
“No Man Takes What's Mine!”

Howard Roark (Gary Cooper) is an architect who will not alter a single line of a design to please a client, a critic, or a bank. The pressure to build what the public expects comes from every side, including from Dominique Francon (Patricia Neal) and the newspaper publisher Gail Wynand (Raymond Massey). King Vidor shoots the black-and-white drama on a grand scale, with towering sets and emotions pitched close to opera.
