Anna (Meryl Streep) and Mike (Jeremy Irons) are cast as Sarah and Charles in a film about a forbidden Victorian love, and both of them have partners at home. As the shoot goes on, the passion in the script starts to follow them off the set, and neither can keep their composure. Karel Reisz cuts between the period story and the affair of the two actors, and Harold Pinter's adaptation gives each its own pull.
