“A Picture That Has Cracked This Shock-Proof Town Wide Open!”

An accused murderer slips out of custody just as Hildy Johnson (Pat O'Brien), an investigative reporter after a bigger paycheck, smells the story of a lifetime. When he tracks the man down, he finds the fugitive may not be guilty, and his editor Walter Burns (Adolphe Menjou) helps him hide the convict while the scoop gets written. Lewis Milestone keeps the newsroom loud and the dialogue overlapping, so the whole picture moves at the speed of a deadline.
