The Funeral

“…A deadly comedy.”

Wabisuke Inoue (Tsutomu Yamazaki) wants to get his father-in-law buried properly, but the old man has died with no plan for it, and the arrangements fall to the family. His wife Chizuko (Nobuko Miyamoto) and her relatives gather at the house for three days of ceremony, awkward in their grief and unsure of the rites. Jūzō Itami writes and directs the days as a run of small, uneven moments, letting the family fill the house.
