“Clint Eastwood is the man in the middle of The Gauntlet”

Nobody can say why a washed-up Phoenix cop gets handed a simple escort job, but Ben Shockley (Clint Eastwood) is sent to Las Vegas to bring back a witness named Gus Mally (Sondra Locke). She turns out to be a belligerent prostitute with mob ties and information about a high-ranking official. Clint Eastwood directs a drifting man and a woman with no use for him, and the film's idea is plain: two people nobody wanted have to depend on each other.
