Union spies steal the locomotive called The General in the middle of the Civil War, and Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack) is still sitting in a boxcar attached to it. Johnnie Gray (Buster Keaton), the engineer who loves the engine almost as much as he loves her, sets off after them with nobody to help. Keaton and Clyde Bruckman make the chase a long, silent run down the rails, and Johnnie's whole case to Annabelle is that he will not stop coming for her.
