O'Hara (Gary Cooper) is an American adventurer in 1930s China, hired by General Pen to carry a large sum of money to Mr. Wu in Shanghai. The money is meant to buy weapons against General Yang (Akim Tamiroff), a warlord who keeps a whole province under his boot. Lewis Milestone's film puts a civil war behind him and one man between Yang and the guns, with a province's freedom riding on a delivery.
