Dr. Lawrence (Peter Cushing) is a retired clergyman living in an old manor on the English moors in the 1930s, and he keeps a closed-off house with a secret in it. Tom Rawlings (John Hurt) and Daphne Welles Hunter (Veronica Carlson) knock at his door after getting lost during a car race, looking only for shelter. Freddie Francis puts the young guests and their strange host under one roof, and neither side quite trusts the other.
