The Girl King

Sweden in the seventeenth century has been ruled by Kristina (Malin Buska) since she was six years old, and she has grown into a queen who wants to modernize her kingdom. Mika Kaurismäki follows her against the circle around Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna (Michael Nyqvist), men with no patience for her reforms or her awakening desire for Countess Ebba Sparre (Sarah Gadon). The film is about a ruler told that the crown and her own wants cannot both be kept.
