“The Tougher They Are—The Harder They Fall”

Paul Madvig (Brian Donlevy) is a crooked politician running a city machine, and he's in the middle of a re-election campaign when he turns down a gangster who wants a piece of it. Ed Beaumont (Alan Ladd) is his loyal right hand, and Stuart Heisler follows the two as a murder is pinned on Madvig and the gangster he refused starts working the case. If the accusation sticks, Madvig loses the election, his grip on the city, and possibly his freedom.
