The Wingfields live in a cramped apartment, in the world of Tennessee Williams' 1944 play, a family with no good way out of it. Amanda (Joanne Woodward), an aging Southern belle, presses her own idea of how life should go on her restless son Tom (John Malkovich) and her crippled daughter Laura (Karen Allen). Paul Newman directs this staging, and the tenderness between Tom and Laura is what keeps them in the room.
