The Goddess

“A story of a mother’s love.”

A young woman in 1934 Shanghai (Ruan Lingyu) walks the streets at night so her small son can go to school in the morning. The Goddess has no name in the film, and Wu Yonggang keeps her in the narrow world of a streetwalker's rooms and a pimp, Boss Zhang (Zhang Zhizhi), who claims her earnings and her days. All she wants is to keep her child out of that world, and he is the only person she holds close.
