Somewhere in the Soviet Union lives a millionaire who hides his fortune from everyone. Ostap Bender (Sergei Yursky), a crook who survived a murder attempt in "12 Chairs," decides to find him and extort a million. Mikhail Shveitser sends Ostap off with his small band, Balaganov (Leonid Kuravlyov) and Panikovsky (Zinoviy Gerdt), and the title points at the Bible's golden calf: people will chase money past all sense.
