The Golden Compass

Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) wants to rescue the children vanishing from Oxford, taken north by the Gobblers. She stows away with a crew of gyptians headed to the Arctic, armed with an alethiometer she doesn't yet understand and her daemon Pantalaimon (Freddie Highmore), a creature bound to her soul. What she finds in the frozen north binds her to the people who raised her and tears her from the one who has always been hers.
