Joe Halsey (Richard Basehart) needs money, and so do the other men he meets in a London pub, all of them with marriages and finances coming apart. Miles Ravenscourt (Laurence Harvey), a playboy with a taste for cruelty, offers them a way out in the form of a mail van robbery. Lewis Gilbert follows four men with no criminal past into a job they believe will save them, and Joe is the one who keeps his wife Mary (Joan Collins) in the dark.
