“If war is Hell, then what comes after?”

Jake Geismar (George Clooney) is an American journalist who comes back to Berlin in the summer of 1945, in the weeks of the Potsdam negotiations. A dead GI turns up at a lakeside mansion, and Jake's questions about the body lead him toward Lena Brandt (Cate Blanchett), the married German woman he loved before the war. Steven Soderbergh shoots it in black and white, and what Jake wants from Lena, answers or the old life, is not clear even to him.
