Jacques (Brian Cox) runs a gritty New York dive bar and spends most days drinking and smoking himself toward an early grave. Then he meets Lucas (Paul Dano), a homeless young man who has already stopped believing his own life is worth anything. Dagur Kári follows the old man as he picks Lucas to inherit the bar, which leaves two men with little time and no one else to leave it to.
