In the dry frontier country of an Italian Western, Clayton (Lee Van Cleef) is a grizzled ex-sheriff who rides in to help Philip Vermeer (Alberto Dentice), a man framed for murder. Vermeer is hunted by the three Saxon brothers, who hold power in the territory and want him dead. Giancarlo Santi, once Sergio Leone's assistant director, gives Clayton the job of keeping a young man alive against men who own the law.
