The Qing dynasty has fallen, and China is splitting apart, which is also when its martial arts schools are at their height. Wong Kar-wai follows Ip Man (Tony Leung Chiu-wai), a Wing Chun master whose quiet life is broken by vengeance, and Gong Er (Zhang Ziyi), a fighter from a rival northern family. Each is the other's equal, and the respect between them is a bond neither can put down.
