The Great Lie

(1941)Directed by Edmund Goulding108 minDrama
“Sometimes there's a terrible penalty for telling the truth.”

When Pete Van Allen (George Brent) is reported dead in a plane crash, his new wife Maggie (Bette Davis) learns that Sandra Kovak (Mary Astor), the woman he almost chose, is carrying his child. Edmund Goulding keeps the two women in the same rooms, with Maggie's aunt Ada (Lucile Watson) and the housekeeper Violet (Hattie McDaniel) looking on. Maggie and Sandra have no reason to trust each other, and each needs what only the other can give.
