In 1876, the gangs of Jesse James (Robert Duvall) and Cole Younger (Cliff Robertson) join forces to rob the First National Bank in Northfield, Minnesota. Philip Kaufman stages the whole thing in a plain documentary style, with grainy light and dusty clothes, as if a camera had followed them out of the old West. Cole is the steady one, Jesse the volatile one, and the partnership runs on a trust neither man can quite afford.
