At the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, sideshow barker Florenz Ziegfeld (William Powell) outsells his richer neighbor Billings (Frank Morgan) and walks off with Billings's girlfriend too. Robert Z. Leonard follows him through the years that come after, as Ziegfeld makes and loses fortune after fortune on shows bigger than the last. Anna Held (Luise Rainer) and Billie Burke (Myrna Loy) move through his life, and the stage keeps growing around him.
