Joe Baylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a police dispatcher taking calls in a darkened room at the Los Angeles emergency center. When a woman's frantic voice describes a kidnapping in progress, Joe pursues the case through phone calls alone. Over one night, he chases fragments of truth until he discovers how much of what happened exists only in the space between what is said and what is true.
