Michael Bannon (Michael Sarrazin) wants to win the Gumball Rally, a secret, winner-take-all race across the USA that starts when one driver whispers "gumball" to another. His rivals come from different backgrounds, among them Gibson (Gary Busey) and Franco (Raúl Juliá), and Lieutenant Roscoe (Norman Burton) is out to stop them. Charles Bail, a former stunt coordinator, builds the film around the cars.
