“You'd never believe they're sisters!”

Helen Chernen (Ida Lupino) is a hard, ambitious woman stuck in a poor mill town, and she has decided her younger sister Katie (Joan Leslie) will not end up there with her. She pushes Katie toward show business, working on her sister's future with a determination that leaves no room for anyone else's wishes. Vincent Sherman directs a backstage drama where Lupino keeps Helen's grip on Katie tight and watchful.
