“With a Piece in His Hand He Takes on the Man!”

Ivan Martin (Jimmy Cliff) comes down to Kingston, Jamaica, from the country with a little money and a plan to make a record. Perry Henzell follows him through the city's crowded streets and cramped studios, where Ivan owes his first song to a producer named Hilton and finds he has nothing but his voice to trade. When the money runs thin, Ivan turns to selling marijuana, and the record he made keeps climbing the charts.
