Eddie Willis (Humphrey Bogart), a sportswriter out of work, takes a job with the fight promoter Nick Benko (Rod Steiger), who needs someone with a clean name to sell his newest boxer. Toro Moreno (Mike Lane) is a huge, trusting Argentinian with a weak punch and a glass jaw, pushed up the rankings through fights that are fixed in advance. Mark Robson films the gyms and the back rooms in flat black and white, and lets the money talk to itself.
