Hill House stands isolated and shut up, a mansion with a sinister history, and Dr. John Markway (Richard Johnson) invites three strangers there under the cover of a sleep-disorder study. His real interest is the house itself. Shy, lonely Eleanor (Julie Harris) and the self-assured Theodora (Claire Bloom) share a bedroom wall, and the closeness between them grows as the house starts to press.
