The Heiress

(1949)Directed by William Wyler115 minDrama, Romance, History
“A truly great motion picture.”

Nobody can say whether Morris Townsend (Montgomery Clift) loves Catherine Sloper (Olivia de Havilland) or only her inheritance. Catherine is a shy, plain young woman in 1840s New York, and her days have never held anything until he arrives. Her father, Dr. Austin Sloper (Ralph Richardson), has already decided what the man is after, and William Wyler keeps the drama inside the family's house, in rooms and on staircases.
