Why would a film star on his way to collect a national award be so unsettled by a train carriage? Arindam Mukherjee (Uttam Kumar) boards the Kolkata to Delhi express for a 24-hour ride, and a young journalist, Aditi Sengupta (Sharmila Tagore), reluctantly starts to interview him. Satyajit Ray sets the whole film inside that journey, where the man the public cheers has to reckon with who he is when no one is watching.
