Pete Calder (Billy Crudup) comes home to the New Mexico range after the Second World War, and what pulls him back is the one friend the war never took from him. That is Big Boy Matson (Woody Harrelson), a rancher who still rides and drinks as hard as ever, though the open country he loves is closing around him. Stephen Frears lets their friendship run into Mona (Patricia Arquette) and Josepha (Penélope Cruz), and both men are heading toward the same heartbreak.
