In 1860s Japan, the shogunate is changing and the samurai class is changing with it. Munezô Katagiri (Masatoshi Nagase), a young samurai, falls in love with Kie (Takako Matsu), a farm girl, and then he is ordered to kill a traitor who is also his dearest friend. Yoji Yamada, adapting a Shūhei Fujisawa story as he did for The Twilight Samurai, tells it plainly and without hurry.
