The Hireling

Lady Franklin (Sarah Miles) is a widow in the years after the First World War, and her spirits have drained away without a reason she can name. She hires Steven Ledbetter (Robert Shaw), a chauffeur, to drive her, and the long hours in the car begin to matter to them both. Alan Bridges keeps them apart in the car, she in the back seat and he at the wheel.
