The Hoax

“Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.”

A famous recluse has not been seen in public for years, and in the early 1970s a struggling novelist named Clifford Irving (Richard Gere) tells a New York publisher that Howard Hughes has chosen him to write his autobiography. Hughes never spoke to him, and Irving, backed by researcher Dick Suskind (Alfred Molina), sells it anyway. Lasse Hallström follows Irving as the lie grows past anything he can manage, and Gere plays a man who cannot stop talking.
