The Holdovers

“Discomfort and joy.”

Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), a classics teacher at a New England prep school in 1970, wants only to be left alone with his grading. Instead he draws Christmas duty, stuck on a nearly empty campus with Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa), a sharp, restless student, and Mary Lamb (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), the head cook, whose son was killed in Vietnam. Alexander Payne sets the three together for two weeks, and each of them has more to lose than a quiet holiday.
