The Home and the World

“TRADITION VERSUS MODERNISM”

In colonial East Bengal in the early 1900s, the wealthy Nikhilesh (Victor Banerjee) decides to test his wife's love by bringing his friend Sandip (Soumitra Chatterjee), a politician agitating against British rule, into their home. Satyajit Ray, working from Tagore's novel, shows Bimala (Swatilekha Sengupta) stepping out of her seclusion, drawn to the cause and to the man. She is no longer the wife who waited, and she has a choice to make.
