Cecil Fox (Rex Harrison), a rich man living in Venice, wants to find out which of three former wives would grieve for him if he died. So he hires an out-of-work actor, William McFly (Cliff Robertson), to play his secretary, then lets word get out that he is dying. Mankiewicz, adapting a play, keeps the talk quick and the stage-bound rooms crowded with performers, each one working an angle.
