The film opens in a 1940s radio orchestra, where a trumpet player nods off in the middle of a commercial. In his dream he is Athanael (Jack Benny), an angel sent down to Earth to blow the Last Trumpet at midnight and end the world. Raoul Walsh sends him through one long night, with Elizabeth (Alexis Smith) among the people he meets, and Athanael just wants to do the job and go home.
