Dr. Herbert Bock (George C. Scott), chief of medicine at a Manhattan hospital, wants only to stop living, his marriage and family long since gone. Then an intern is found dead in a hospital bed, and Bock draws close to Barbara Drummond (Diana Rigg), the daughter of a comatose missionary. Arthur Hiller films Paddy Chayefsky's script as a place built to heal people that cannot stop killing them.
