“How many times does it take to steal the same diamond?”

In New York in 1972, John Dortmunder (Robert Redford) is out of prison and already planning another job, a huge diamond sitting in a museum. He pulls in Andrew Kelp (George Segal), Stanley Murch (Ron Leibman) and Alan Greenburg (Paul Sand), and Peter Yates keeps the whole crew moving from one scheme to the next. The diamond has to be stolen more than once, and every miss costs the four of them more.
