The House of Mirth

(2000)Directed by Terence Davies140 minDrama, Romance
“When a woman has the beauty men admire and women envy... it is wise to tread carefully.”

Lily Bart (Gillian Anderson) moves through the drawing rooms of early twentieth-century New York with no money of her own and a short time to find a husband who has plenty. She lives on the generosity of her aunt, Mrs. Julia Peniston (Eleanor Bron), and the good opinion of friends like Gus Trenor (Dan Aykroyd). Terence Davies follows her from one invitation to the next, and she keeps smiling and keeps choosing, even as the people around her begin to withdraw.
