The Hunchback of Notre Dame

(1956)Directed by Jean Delannoy115 min · PGDrama, Horror
“The timeless tale of the seductive gypsy Esmeralda and the tortured hunchback Quasimodo.”

In 1482 Paris, the Chief Justice Claude Frollo (Alain Cuny) can't account for what has taken hold of him, and he decides the cause is Esmeralda (Gina Lollobrigida), a young Romani girl. He turns to Quasimodo (Anthony Quinn), the bell-ringer of Notre Dame who has lived among the bells under his care. Jean Delannoy films Hugo's story in color and CinemaScope, with Frollo's belief in the Devil's work pushing an official to treat his own desire as a crime of hers.
