The Iceman Cometh
“They drank and they dreamed...tomorrow they would conquer the world...then along came Hickey.”
Every year, the drunks at Harry Hope's saloon wait for Hickey (Lee Marvin), the salesman who turns up to buy rounds and tell stories from the road. It is 1912 in the Last Chance Saloon, and this time he arrives sober, urging them to drop their dreams. John Frankenheimer films O'Neill's play almost entirely indoors, where men like Larry Slade (Robert Ryan) live on tomorrow's promises, because the truth about their lives is harder to drink than whiskey.
