The Idiot

(1951)Directed by Akira Kurosawa166 minDrama, Romance

In wintry Hokkaidō after the war, Kinji Kameda (Masayuki Mori) steps off the boat a gentle, shattered ex-soldier with no one waiting for him. Akira Kurosawa adapts Dostoevsky and puts Kameda between the disgraced Taeko Nasu (Setsuko Hara), the proud Ayako (Yoshiko Kuga), and his possessive friend Akama (Toshirō Mifune). Kameda pities Taeko and loves Ayako, and Akama's jealousy hangs over every room they share.
