A man steps off a train from Switzerland, where he was treated in a psychiatric clinic, and the first person he meets is Parfyon Rogozhin (Leonid Parkhomenko), who cannot stop talking about Nastasya Filippovna. In St. Petersburg, Prince Myshkin (Yuriy Yakovlev) lands in the General's house, where a portrait of her lying on a desk is enough to hold him. Ivan Pyryev adapts only the first part of Dostoevsky's novel, so everyone in the room stands to lose their hearts.
