The Immigrant

Ewa Cybulska (Marion Cotillard) steps off the boat at Ellis Island in 1921, and within days her sister is held in quarantine while she is left with no money, no papers, and a stranger's offer of help. That stranger is Bruno Weiss (Joaquin Phoenix), who puts her to work in his burlesque and vaudeville show, and James Gray films the shadowy corners of New York around her. Ewa will do whatever Bruno asks if it keeps her sister from being sent back.
