The Importance of Being Earnest

Jack Worthing (Michael Redgrave) wants to marry Gwendolen Fairfax (Joan Greenwood), and to do it he must keep up the second name he uses as "Ernest" whenever he leaves the country for London. His friend Algernon Moncrieff (Michael Denison) has borrowed the same name, and both men fall for women who adore it. Anthony Asquith films Wilde's play, and the real subject is how much of polite society is a story told with a straight face.
