“Visconti's Sensual Epic of a Diabolical Marriage”

Tullio Hermil (Giancarlo Giannini) is an aristocrat who sees nothing wrong in keeping a mistress and letting his wife Giuliana (Laura Antonelli) know it. What he wants is her patience, and he has always had it, until he comes to believe she has been unfaithful and he begins to desire her again. Luchino Visconti, in his final film, fills the rooms with candlelight and heavy fabric and lets the camera hold on faces.
